Badung, Bali. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is set to launch Starlink satellite internet services in Indonesia alongside Elon Musk during an international event in Bali this weekend, a senior official announced on Tuesday.

Chief Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said the launch ceremony will take place on the sidelines of the World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali.

"Elon Musk will inaugurate Starlink services in the presence of President Jokowi to provide communication access in remote regions next Sunday," Luhut said in Bali.

He said Elon Musk has been invited as a guest speaker at the Bali forum.

Luhut did not provide details about the agreement between the Indonesian government and Musk’s SpaceX, the American aerospace company that operates Starlink services.

Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said earlier that the government needs Starlink to expand high-speed internet services in remote regions of the sprawling archipelago.

Local internet providers, which rely on base transceiver stations to transmit signals, have limited coverage and cannot reach outer islands.

Starlink, on the other hand, uses low earth orbit satellites with nationwide coverage.

Budi said Starlink has been granted an operational license as a telecommunication service provider in Indonesia.
