Instagram and Facebook Services Experience Worldwide Outage, Elon Musk Takes a Dig
Jakarta. Social media giant Meta experienced a widespread outage affecting its apps – Facebook, Instagram, and Threads – on Tuesday night, with services being restored on Wednesday morning.
Users experienced disruptions on Instagram as desktop users encountered a complete absence of feeds while existing Instagram Stories were visible but lacked updates. On mobile, the feed remained intact, but users reported difficulties in posting updates.
Similar issues were reported on Facebook, where a notification stating "Facebook Session Expired" appeared for mobile users.
Acknowledging the disruption, Andy Stone, the Head of Communications at Meta, tweeted on Tuesday night, "We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now."
Capitalizing on the situation, Elon Musk playfully jabbed at Meta's owner, Mark Zuckerberg, tweeting, "If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working." Musk also shared a meme featuring penguins saluting another penguin wearing a general hat with an X logo – a subtle reference to the Meta outage.
As of this morning, Meta has not provided an explanation for the service disruption. The company boasts approximately 3.19 billion daily active users across its suite of apps, which include Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp.
