Elon Musk’s X Reprimanded for Carrying Gambling Ads in Indonesia
Jakarta. The Indonesian government has issued a written warning against social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, for running online gambling ads, a senior official said on Tuesday.
The platform, owned by US billionaire Elon Musk, has continued to display online gambling ads for its Indonesian users. Gambling is a criminal offense in the country.
"We issued a formal warning to X following reports and complaints from community members about many online gambling ads circulating on that platform,” Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
The letter also requested the company’s Indonesian operation to block and take down those ads, Budi added.
A similar instruction has been sent to US tech giant Meta, which runs social media platforms Facebook and Instagram.
Budi said that since he took office on July 17, more than 800,000 online gambling sites and file-sharing apps have been taken down for violating Indonesian laws.
