Communication Minister Confirms Starlink Testing in Indonesia's Future Capital
Jakarta. Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Ari Setiadi, has confirmed that Elon Musk's telecommunication service provider company, Starlink, will undergo testing in the future capital of Indonesia, Nusantara, in May.
Starlink has applied for two permits in Indonesia, namely as a very small-aperture terminal (VSAT) provider and an internet service provider (ISP).
"The testing schedule is planned for May, we will wait and see. The exact date is not yet confirmed, but it will be around May," said Budi in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He explained that if the testing phase proceeds smoothly and the operation permit is issued while adhering to Indonesia's laws, Starlink would be allowed to operate, likely by Independence Day on August 17.
"Starlink operates with satellite technology. The testing must be conducted in areas with minimal telecommunication infrastructure to assess its effectiveness," he concluded.
Starlink's presence in Indonesia operates on a business-to-business (B-to-B) basis through a partnership with Telkomsat, a subsidiary of the state-owned telecommunications company Telkom.
According to Starlink's website, the company is eyeing to provide services across all of Indonesia this year. To register, a customer can visit the company's website, put in the address, and pay a fully refundable deposit of $9
