Chinese Auto Brands Step Up Competition with New EVs and SUVs at IIMS 2026
Jakarta. A wave of new electrified and premium vehicles made their debut at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2026, intensifying competition in the country’s fast-growing SUV and electric mobility market.
Chinese automaker Wuling Motors unveiled the Eksion, a seven-seat family SUV offered in both full electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants, marking its first entry into Indonesia’s electrified large-SUV segment. Displayed publicly for the first time at IIMS 2026, the Eksion targets consumers seeking flexible mobility for urban use and long-distance travel.
The Eksion becomes Wuling’s second model in Indonesia to adopt its proprietary Wuling Technology platform after the Darion, and the first family SUV locally to offer both EV and PHEV options within a single product line. The EV version features a Magic Battery Pro with a driving range of up to 530 kilometers, while the PHEV variant combines a gasoline engine and electric motor to deliver a claimed range exceeding 1,000 kilometers.
“This year we are preparing new products to meet evolving consumer needs,” said Wuling Motors Marketing Director Ricky Christian, pointing to the company’s expanding electrified portfolio across multiple vehicle segments.
Meanwhile, Great Wall Motor (GWM) officially entered Indonesia’s large premium SUV segment with the launch of the Tank 500 Diesel, expanding the Tank 500 lineup that previously included only a hybrid variant. Distributed by Inchcape GWM Indonesia, the diesel-powered SUV targets buyers seeking a combination of rugged capability, fuel efficiency and luxury.
Powered by a 2.4-liter turbo diesel engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the Tank 500 Diesel delivers 135 kW of power and 480 Nm of torque. It comes equipped with Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), a 540-degree camera system and a seven-seat cabin finished with Nappa leather. Prices start at Rp 799 million ($47,300) for the 4x2 variant and Rp 889 million for the 4x4 version, on-the-road Jakarta.
Chinese brand BAIC also expanded its electrified SUV lineup by introducing the BJ30 Hybrid in three variants — Lite, Prime and Adventure — offering front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive options. The hybrid SUV combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with electric motors, delivering a claimed range of up to 1,000 kilometers and fuel efficiency of 15.5 kilometers per liter.
The BJ30 is positioned to appeal to a broad spectrum of users, from urban commuters to outdoor enthusiasts, with the Adventure variant featuring off-road driving modes and all-terrain capability.
Separately, Changan Automobile marked its first participation at IIMS following its official market entry in Indonesia late last year. Partnering with the Indomobil Group, Changan showcased its electric models Deepal S07 and Lumin, as part of its push into the local EV market. The Deepal S07, priced at Rp 599 million, has earned five-star Euro NCAP safety ratings globally, while the compact Lumin city car is offered at Rp 183 million.
Beyond passenger cars, Indonesia's Indomobil Emotor Internasional debuted two electric motorcycles, QT and QT Pro, priced from Rp 15 million. The models feature traction control, keyless operation and regenerative braking, reflecting growing competition in Indonesia’s electric two-wheeler segment.
