Tanoto Foundation Offers Rp 122m Scholarships for Education Journalists
Jakarta. The philanthropic organization Tanoto Foundation is organizing a scholarship totaling Rp 122 million for journalists to cover education-themed topics.
The scholarship is open for various submissions, be it written articles or podcasts. Registration will go on until Oct. 31. The top 20 proposals will receive scholarships worth Rp 100 million. Once published, the three best coverage pieces will receive additional awards of Rp 5 million, Rp 7 million, and Rp 10 million.
There are three main themes:
- Early Childhood Education and Development: Addressing issues of stunting, quality of caregiving, and access to early childhood education.
- Primary Education: Focusing on improving educator quality and school management.
- Higher Education: Emphasizing the need for soft skills and leadership among students.
Theme 1: Early Childhood Education and Development:
The Tanoto Foundation's program in this segment (SIGAP Program) operates at regional (East Kalimantan, Riau, Central Java, North Sumatra, and Jakarta) and national levels, including:

Theme 2: Primary Education
Through the PINTAR program, the Tanoto Foundation invests in primary education to create better learning environments and improve student performance. The PINTAR program includes:

Theme 3: Higher Education
The TELADAN program is not just a scholarship for undergraduate students but also includes structured leadership training to enhance soft skills and essential competencies needed for graduates to enter the workforce and positively impact society.

Timeline and Terms: The Journalist Coverage Scholarship process runs from October 2024 to December 2024, starting from proposal submission to the announcement of the three best coverage pieces. Key dates include:
- Proposal submission: October 14-31, 2024
- Announcement of selected proposals: November 5, 2024
- Online training: November 7, 2024
- Publication of articles in respective media: no later than December 6, 2024
- Announcement of the three best coverage pieces: December 11, 2024
Participant Requirements:
- Participants must be active journalists (staff or freelance) working with media in Indonesia.
- They should have a focus and/or interest in educational themes.
- Complete the registration documents via the registration link.
- Proposals must not have been submitted to other competitions.
- Proposals must be original, not adaptations, translations, or plagiarized, in accordance with the Journalistic Code of Ethics.
- Participants may submit more than one proposal.
- Proposals must not contain elements that violate ethnic, religious, racial, and intergroup issues principles, hate speech, or negative incitement.
Proposal Requirements:
- Proposed title or theme for coverage.
- Format of journalistic work (Article, Photo Essay, Video, Podcast, or a combination).
- List of key resource persons planned for interviews.
- Summary of the education coverage plan (maximum 250 words).
- Proposals must be submitted by October 31, 2024.
- Include quotes/interviews/research results from the Tanoto Foundation in the published journalistic work.
- The work must be new coverage, produced between November 5 and December 6, 2024.
- Selected Proposal Conditions:
- 20 selected journalists will receive a Coverage Scholarship for Education with the operational funding support of Rp 5,000,000 each, totaling IDR 100,000,000.
- The scholarship will be disbursed in two stages: Rp 2,500,000 after the announcement of selected journalists/proposals and Rp 2,500,000 after the completion of the Coverage Scholarship program and publication of the journalistic work.
- The journalistic work can consist of more than one article (e.g., a series) or a combination of articles, photos, videos, and podcasts.
- The work must be published in the media where the journalist works by December 6, 2024.
- The journalistic work must be original (not an adaptation) and produced between November 5 and December 5, 2024.
- Adhere to the Journalistic Code of Ethics throughout the coverage, writing/production, and publication process.
Best Coverage Conditions: At the end of the Coverage Scholarship program, three Best Journalistic Works will be selected to receive awards totaling Rp 22,000,000:
First Place: Rp 10,000,000
Second Place: Rp 7,000,000
Third Place: Rp 5,000,000
The selection of the best journalistic works will be based on the following criteria:
- Relevance of the educational coverage theme.
- Depth of educational content.
- Strength of the conveyed message.
- Uniqueness of the coverage.
- Originality of the work.
