Denpasar. Sira Village Grand Outlet Bali officially opened on Sunday following an investment of Rp 1.5 trillion ($85 million), introducing a new shopping and lifestyle complex designed in part to attract tourists looking to spend their final hours on the island before heading to the airport.

Located in the Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone, Sira Village is a joint project between Japan's Mitsubishi Estate and PT Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID). The development is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs.

The outlet complex features more than 100 premium brands and will introduce live flight information beginning next month, allowing visitors to monitor their flight status while shopping, dining or spending time at the coastal development.

A complimentary shuttle service to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport will also be available, positioning the complex as an alternative stop for travelers before departing Bali.

The developers said the project is intended to encourage tourists to spend more within Indonesia while supporting Bali's development as an international tourism and lifestyle destination.

Sira Village's soft opening brings several new retail concepts to the island, including Bali's first Kinokuniya bookstore and Sira Space, which features a selection of premium brands curated by retail group MAP. US fashion brand Hazelwood is also making its Indonesian debut at the complex.

Other international and Indonesian brands include Coach, Kate Spade, BOSS, Adidas, Nike, True Religion, Puma, Lacoste, Steve Madden, Tommy Hilfiger and Alun Alun Indonesia.

More tenants are expected to open in the coming months as the development expands its mix of retail, restaurants, arts and entertainment.

Shopping Meets Bali's Tourism Industry
The developers are seeking to make Sira Village more than a conventional outlet mall by integrating retail with dining, cultural performances and recreational spaces.

Visitors can shop before moving to alfresco dining areas, browse products made by local artisans or attend cultural performances. A rooftop terrace bar and infinity pool overlooking the surrounding tropical landscape are among the complex's leisure facilities.

The live flight information service and airport shuttle are designed to make those facilities particularly accessible to travelers approaching the end of their stay in Bali.

Foreign tourists can also access VAT refund facilities at participating MAP brands, subject to applicable requirements.

Sira Village President Director Tantowi Yahya said the development was intended to add a different type of tourism and retail experience to an island already known internationally for its natural attractions and culture.

“Bali has always been known for its natural beauty and culture. Sira Village offers something the island has not had before -- a destination where shopping, dining and culture come together in one place,” Tantowi said.

“With the presence of this outlet, spending that might otherwise take place overseas can be retained domestically for the benefit of Bali and Indonesia,” he added.

Sira Village is Mitsubishi Estate Group's second outlet development in Indonesia and its first in Bali.

“The opening of our second outlet project in Indonesia, and our first in Bali, marks an important milestone for Mitsubishi Estate Group's international business,” said Toru Hayamizu, executive officer and general manager of International Business Development at Mitsubishi Estate Corporation.

“Bali is one of the world's leading resort destinations, and the Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone offers significant potential for quality tourism and sustainable growth,” he said.

Hayamizu said the company aims to combine Bali's diverse visitor market and cultural attractions with an international-standard outlet shopping experience.

Balinese Design and Sustainability
Sira Village's architecture draws inspiration from the layout of traditional Balinese communities, incorporating contemporary interpretations of the bale, or pavilion, and natah, the central open space traditionally found within Balinese compounds.

Retail units surround communal areas designed for families and pets, while shaded corridors, landscaping and water features seek to recreate elements of a coastal village environment.

The developers said sustainability measures include the use of local and recycled materials, natural ventilation, energy-efficient air conditioning and facilities for managing plastic waste.

The development is also undergoing assessment for BCA Green Mark Gold certification, an international green building rating administered by Singapore's Building and Construction Authority.

The opening celebrations include live music, cultural performances, fashion shows and contemporary art, with weekend community performances planned as part of the development's regular programming.

Among the opening events are a Hanoman Obong performance by Bumi Bajra, the Grand Couture Bali Goddesses fashion show, traditional Balinese clothing experiences and Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design (ICAD).

Sira Village is also working with Bluebird, Gojek and Grab on transportation promotions intended to improve access to the complex.

The project adds another major commercial development to Bali's tourism economy while testing a concept that combines outlet shopping with the island's established attractions of food, culture and outdoor leisure.
