Jakarta. Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), a subsidiary of the oil company, and the doctorSHARE foundation recently partnered to provide healthcare services at the Nusa Waluya II Hospital Ship in North Waigeo, Raja Ampat, Southwest Papua.

Between June 10 and August 8, over 4,000 patients and beneficiaries had accessed these joint healthcare services. The initiative was part of PIS’ so-called “BerSEAnergi untuk Laut” program. It also targets the people living in the said remote areas.

"Our humanitarian mission with doctorSHARE has achieved our goal of providing the local community access to the free, much-needed healthcare services. It also aligns with our commitment to advance Indonesia’s maritime industry,” Muhammad Baron, the corporate secretary at PIS, said.

The Nusa Waluya II is a hospital ship equipped with various medical services, including dental, maternal, pediatrics, emergency room, a lab, and many more. They also provide general practitioners, specialists, ultrasound, X-ray services, and blood bank facilities. The clinics have taken care of 2,903 patients. Some 1,106 individuals had benefited from the health promotion activities.

There are 31 medical personnel and 14 volunteer specialists with the details as follows: 4 surgeons, 3 anesthesiologists, 4 obstetricians, 1 anesthesia resident, 1 internist, and 1 volunteer anesthetic technician. “PIS’ support has enabled us to complete the challenging healthcare services in North Waigeo, Raja Ampat,” doctorSHARE’s chair Tutuk Utomo said, while calling other businesses to follow in PIS’ footsteps.

Raja Ampat’s geographical conditions have presented unique challenges for the Nusa Waluya II Hospital. For instance, it can be difficult for the hospital to refer urgent medical cases to the regional hospital as it takes time to travel by sea. There are also challenges related to the weather and the medical equipment operation.

The floating hospital program, supported by PIS, aligns with the social aspect as promoted by environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. It also contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

“This is an example of how PIS continues to strive to positively impact coastal and island communities who struggle to access healthcare. We will continue to strive to make positive contributions through the BerSEAnergi untuk Laut program in the future," Baron said.
