OJK Launches Nationwide Initiative to Boost Student Savings and Financial Literacy
Jakarta. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) on Friday unveiled a new initiative to promote saving habits among students, part of a nationwide effort to boost financial literacy and prepare the next generation for the country’s 2045 economic vision.
OJK launched the 2025 Hari Indonesia Menabung (HIM), or Indonesia Savings Day, and Bulan Literasi Keuangan (BLK), or Financial Literacy Month, in Jakarta under the theme CEMERLANG: “Smart Saving for a Golden and Bright Indonesia.” Hundreds of students, from elementary to university level, attended the event at the Ministry of Finance’s Dhanapala Hall
The event was attended by Chief Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto, OJK Deputy Chairman Mirza Adityaswara, OJK Chief Executive for Consumer Protection Friderica Widyasari Dewi, and West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, alongside leaders from ministries and the financial services industry.
Minister Airlangga, also Chairman of the National Council for Financial Inclusion (DNKI), highlighted how saving early promotes independence. “Saving helps young people reduce dependence on parents. When they already have savings, they gain the independence to meet their needs without always asking for money,” he said.
Echoing this, Mirza Adityaswara added that saving goes beyond personal benefit; it is a driver of national growth. “Community savings become the funding source for companies, job creation, and Indonesia’s development. Today’s youth can easily save through programs like SimPel (Simpanan Pelajar). The message remains the same: build the habit of saving from an early age,” Mirza emphasized.
Friderica Widyasari Dewi reminded students that financial discipline is key to long-term security. “Buy your needs and wants with savings, not debt. Be cautious of illegal online loans and consumerism driven by trends, as it can harm the future of young people,” she warned.
OJK’s Satu Rekening Satu Pelajar (KEJAR), or 'one student, one account' program, has delivered impressive results. Nearly 88 percent of Indonesian students, 58.32 million in total, now own savings accounts, with deposits exceeding Rp34 trillion.
During HIM 2025 alone, more than 263,000 new accounts were opened with total deposits of Rp 338.6 billion. Nationwide, over 4,200 outreach activities engaged more than 334,000 participants, from students and teachers to parents. The Bank Goes to School initiative has expanded massively, with 120,000 programs across 101,000 schools nationwide.
These achievements reflect the strong commitment to improving financial access and building financial independence among Indonesia’s young generation.
Driving Financial Literacy Nationwide
Alongside HIM, OJK also spearheaded the Bulan Literasi Keuangan (BLK) as part of the Gerakan Nasional Cerdas Keuangan (GENCARKAN), or the National Smart Finance Movement. Running from May to August 2025, BLK featured kick-off events, the Financial Literacy Series, nationwide campaigns, and the Financial Literacy Award 2025. The initiative reached millions, with over 7,000 activities across 415 cities and districts and 4,225 digital campaigns generating more than 100 million views.
As part of its grand finale, OJK presented the KEJAR Award and Financial Literacy Award to banks, schools, local governments, and financial institutions for their dedication to expanding financial literacy and inclusion. Recognized organizations included leading banks, innovative schools, and pioneering regional governments whose efforts have helped embed financial awareness deeply across communities.
Through HIM and BLK 2025, OJK reaffirms its mission: to nurture a culture of saving, strengthen financial literacy, and empower young Indonesians to become financially independent. This commitment lays a solid foundation for Indonesia Emas 2045, a future where financially savvy youth will serve as the backbone of sustainable national growth.
