Jakarta. Mining giant Merdeka Copper Gold recently vowed to uphold inclusion and diversity -- including gender equality -- in its recruitment process and workplace.

In a press release, the company said it had made a series of workplace policies that follow the International Labor Organization (ILO) principles. This includes diversity and inclusivity, anti-discrimination, gender equality, as well as on how to avoid conflicts of interest. Merdeka Group is also embracing the sustainable development goals (SDGs), namely Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

“We are giving equal career opportunities to our employees by upholding gender equality and inclusion. We vow to boost the chances of women having a career in the male-dominated mining industry. Everyone has equal opportunities to secure a managerial post,” Titien Supeno, the director for human resources at Merdeka Copper Gold, was quoted as saying in a recent press statement.

As of end-November 2023, almost 10 percent of Merdeka employees are women. This is equivalent to 782 people. The percentage is also higher than the average female workforce in the mining industry, which stood at 6 percent, according to the Manpower Ministry. Women also hold 12.5 percent of the board of director seats at Merdeka.

According to Titien, Merdeka has also recruited a number of people with disabilities. Titien said the recruitment process also aligned with the government regulations and international standards. They also uphold diversity and inclusion, anti-corruption, anti-bribery, eliminating child labor and forced labor, as well as anti-discrimination and gender equality policies.

"We make Merdeka a healthy career platform that is based on equality, while still prioritizing cultural values and applicable laws both within the company and the central government," Titien said.

This year, Merdeka also supported a job opportunity program that places 6 people with disabilities in several departments. Titien added the company has established a proportional assessment system and reporting system that accommodates the employees’ needs.
