Karawaci. Models from the Jember Fashion Carnaval, or JFC, kicked off the Lippo Village Festival at Lippo Village in Karawaci, Banten, on Saturday with their extravagant, over-the-top costumes.

The JFC stuck closely to the festival's official theme of "Tribal Grandeur," showing outlandish costumes inspired by tribal outfits from around the world.

The JFC is now considered one of the top three fashion carnivals in the world.

The head of Banten's tourism office, Eneng Nurcahyati, officially opened the Lippo Village Festival by beating an Indonesian gendang, or drum. The event was also attended by Lippo Karawaci chief executive John Riady and JFC director Intan Ayundavira.

The JFC brought a total of eighty of its distinctive, exquisitely detailed outfits to the Lippo Village Festival runway. Their models included boys and girls.

The traditionally inspired outfits included takes on the mythical bird Garuda – the official emblem of Indonesia, the Hudog from East Kalimantan and Minahasa traditional costumes from North Sulawesi.

There were also costumes inspired by Aztec culture, the traditional outfits of the Karen tribe from Thailand and Viking outfits to lend the festival an international air.

A 500-meter runway on Lippo Village's Palem Boulevard was erected for the festival, stretching from the Imperial Karawaci Golf to the Menara Matahari traffic circle.

"We've brought the JFC to Banten for the first time to promote this world-class cultural festival. We hope to do this event every year. Next year it will be bigger and better," John said.

Intan said bringing the JFC to the Lippo Village Festival will help visitors find out more about the diversity of culture in Indonesia.

Every Friday and Saturday from Oct. 23 to Dec. 14, the festival will feature traditional music concerts, Christmas dance performances and musical theaters at the Menara Matahari stage and Benton Junction, a popular food court in Lippo Village.

A concert headlined by Resonarz Music Studio and the Jakarta Concert Orchestra conducted by Avip Priatna will end the festival on Dec. 14 at the Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) Grand Chapel.
