Kazan, Russia. Indonesia and Russia have agreed to intensify follow-up cooperation across a range of strategic sectors as Jakarta seeks to strengthen its economic engagement in the Eurasian region and advance implementation of the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement, or Indonesia-EAEU FTA.

The commitment was highlighted during the 14th Joint Commission Session on Trade, Economic, and Technical Cooperation held in Kazan on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Kazan Forum 2026.

The meeting was co-chaired by Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.

The annual forum has become a strategic platform for strengthening bilateral economic ties amid ongoing global economic uncertainty, while also following up on discussions between President Prabowo Subianto and President Vladimir Putin on April 13.

“This meeting also serves as an opportunity for both sides to review progress in bilateral cooperation implementation while discussing various priority issues in Indonesia-Russia economic relations,” Airlangga said in a statement.

The session reviewed bilateral economic developments and discussed future priorities, particularly in trade and investment, agriculture and fisheries, energy, industry, higher education and science, and stronger engagement between business communities.

Airlangga said the session reflected both countries’ continuing commitment to building more concrete and mutually beneficial economic cooperation, especially as Indonesia and Russia mark 76 years of diplomatic relations this year.

“The 14th joint commission session is also an important platform to ensure that the Indonesia-Russia strategic partnership can be translated into more tangible economic practices. Amid the current global order and dynamics, Indonesia is encouraging cooperation based on mutual interests, including through the utilization of the Indonesia-EAEU free trade agreement,” Airlangga said.

Manturov, meanwhile, called for stronger participation in developing future bilateral cooperation, improving existing achievements, and exploring untapped opportunities between the two countries.

Deputy Trade Minister Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri said trade relations between Indonesia and EAEU member states continue to show positive growth, with opportunities to expand market access for Indonesian flagship exports, including palm-based and coconut products.

Indonesia is also continuing the ratification process for the Indonesia-EAEU FTA while promoting the establishment of an Indonesia-EAEU Business Council to strengthen connectivity between businesses on both sides.

Deputy Energy Minister Yuliot Tanjung also outlined developments in bilateral energy cooperation, noting that Indonesia continues to expand national electricity generation capacity with a focus on clean energy development and long-term energy security.

At the same meeting, Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono said Indonesia achieved rice self-sufficiency in 2025 as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen food security and domestic production capacity under President Prabowo’s policy direction.

He added that Indonesia and Russia share a naturally complementary partnership with significant opportunities to deepen agricultural cooperation and expand trade in agricultural products.

As a closing step, Airlangga stressed that the outcomes of the joint commission meeting should be followed up by the nine working groups operating under the bilateral framework.

“Indonesia is committed to ensuring that all working groups under this commission continue advancing the cooperation agenda so that technical issues can be resolved quickly and the outcomes of this meeting provide tangible benefits for businesses and the people of both countries,” Airlangga said.

Indonesia also invited Manturov and the Russian delegation to participate in Trade Expo Indonesia 2026.
