IDX Sees Trading Activity Pick Up After Midday Data Distribution Upgrade
Jakarta. The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) has recorded stronger trading activity since upgrading its market data distribution format at the end of the first trading session, a move aimed at improving the speed and quality of information available to investors.
The enhancement, which took effect on Aug. 25, 2025, allows key trading data to be distributed at the close of Session I rather than only at the end of the trading day. IDX said the change is part of its ongoing efforts to support more informed and efficient decision-making across the capital market.
“The improved data distribution enables information to be consumed more quickly at the end of Session I, allowing market participants to respond to market conditions and make investment decisions more optimally in Session II,” Jeffrey Hendrik, IDX Director of Development, said in a written statement on Wednesday.
Since the implementation, daily trading activity has shown a positive trend, with transaction values consistently staying above $1 billion per day. According to Jeffrey, this performance indicates that faster and more structured data delivery has contributed to higher trading efficiency and quality.
“This achievement positions IDX as one of the exchanges with the highest activity and liquidity in Southeast Asia,” he said.
The upgraded format has also helped rebalance trading activity between the two daily sessions. Previously, transactions were skewed toward the first session, with a ratio of 58% in Session I and 42% in Session II. Following the change, the distribution has become more even at 55% and 45%, respectively.
The shift has been accompanied by a sharp increase in transaction values across both sessions. IDX data show that the average transaction value in Session I jumped 88.21% after the upgrade, while Session II recorded a 64.56% increase. IDX attributed the improvement to investors having earlier access to relevant data, allowing them to better determine entry and exit timing.
“Faster data makes the market more responsive, more liquid, and more dynamic,” Jeffrey said.
The improvement in market quality has also been reflected in investor participation. The number of daily active investors rose by 28% to around 250,000 as of Dec. 16, up from about 195,000 prior to the enhancement.
“Such growth shows a positive response from market participants to data distribution that is faster, more structured, and more relevant for decision-making,” Jeffrey added.
Under the new system, eight additional data files that were previously available only at the end of the trading day are now also distributed at the end of Session I. These include summaries of trading activity by investor domicile code, data on indices listed on the IDX, and recapitulations of trading by investor type.
IDX said investors can access these datasets through their respective brokerage firms and use them as an additional reference in formulating investment strategies.
With the enhancement, the exchange aims to further strengthen transparency, support liquidity growth, and reinforce Indonesia’s capital market competitiveness in the region.
