Jakarta. The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) continues to enhance the efficiency and quality of capital-market transactions through a range of initiatives aimed at improving execution speed and ease for investors. One of the key developments is the growing adoption of the Market Order feature, which offers a higher likelihood of execution and allows investors to trade without specifying prices, making transactions more responsive to market conditions.

IDX data show that from January to August 2025, Market Orders accounted for an average of 4.23 percent of all matched orders on the exchange. In August alone, average daily Market Order usage exceeded Rp 1 trillion, or approximately $60 million.

IDX Director of Development Jeffrey Hendrik said the uptake reflects strong investor demand for faster and more effective execution.

“Compared with 2024, utilisation of the Market Order feature rose by 98.5 percent, indicating that many investors benefit from its ability to deliver more optimal order execution,” he said on Thursday.

The IDX currently supports two order types: Market Orders and Limit Orders. Market Orders are prioritized for execution and are immediately matched at the best available price in the market. By contrast, Limit Orders require investors to specify a price and, in some cases, timing, meaning orders are executed based on queue priority.

From a technical standpoint, Market Orders are particularly advantageous for investors seeking to trade stocks with the potential for gap-up or gap-down movements, or those aiming to capitalise on periods of heightened price volatility. The feature is also commonly used for newly listed stocks, as Market Orders — especially those using the fill-and-kill option — offer a higher probability of matching during the pre-opening session compared with Limit Orders.

Speed remains the primary advantage of Market Orders. By removing the need to input a specific price, investors can execute transactions more quickly and efficiently, particularly in fast-moving markets.

“Because Market Orders carry higher execution priority, investors can place trades without setting prices, significantly accelerating and simplifying the transaction process,” Jeffrey said.

Further information on the Market Order feature is available on the IDX’s official website. Investors may also contact their respective securities companies to confirm the availability of Market Order services on their trading platforms.
