How to Store Rice Flour Properly

From soft porridge to mouth-watering traditional cakes, rice flour is a mainstay ingredient in Indonesian cooking. Rice flour is made from perfectly ground rice. And it is important to store rice flour properly so it remains fresh. Here are some tips on how to store rice flour:

1. Store Old and New Rice Flour Separately

There is one thing that we often miss, namely when we store rice flour. We often mix various types of rice flour into one container. But this is not something recommended as mixing them can spoil the rice flour. It is better to store rice flour according to the use-by date separately. If there is old rice flour, we should use it up first before opening a new one. 

2. Make Sure to Store Rice Flour in a Closed Container

Once you open the packaging, make sure you put the rice flour that you do not use in a tightly closed container. You can keep it in its original packaging but make sure it can be closed tightly. 

3. Store it in a Dry and Clean Place

Make sure that wherever you put the rice flour container in is dry and clean. Dampness and dirt can lead to mold and insect infestation. Also, make sure to keep the rice flour away from direct sunlight. 

4. Store Rice Flour in the Refrigerator

You can put it in both the refrigerator or freezer -- the latter being a possible option if you do not plan on using the rice flour in the near future. The low temperature prevents weevils. Butif you plan to use the rice flour in the near future, it is better to store it in the chiller and keep it away from wet and strong-smelling foods.

5. Avoid Storing Rice Flour for Too Long

Although rice flour is classified as a dry ingredient that can last a long time, it does not mean that you can store it for too long. Why is that? Because it will reduce its quality. The smell and taste that may change, thus possibly affecting your cooking. Use rice flour within 6 months after opening the package. If it has passed that limit, you should throw it away and replace it with a new one.

Storing rice flour properly is not the only thing you need to pay attention to when cooking.
