How QRIS Astrapay Lets Small Businesses Level Up
Jakarta. At 7 a.m., the checkout counter of a small breakfast warung turns into a place where two anxieties meet.
Customers rush to go to the office or campus, while the business owners rummage their drawers to find change. When the queue subsides, a new problem arises. Numerous questions come across the sellers' head. How many portions did they sell? How much money should they reinvest as capital? How much profit did they record that morning? For these small stalls, the problem is not on whether they run out of customers. It's because the money comes every single day, but they have not turned it into information that can help their decision-making.
This problem is key as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are not simply a side hustle.
The government reported that MSMEs made up 15.7% of Indonesia's exports, hence, their growth determines the country's economic resilience. In the first half of 2025, QRIS reached 57 million users and 39.3 million merchants; some 93.16% are MSMEs, according to Bank Indonesia. This number shows that the "door" to digital transformation is wide open.
The next challenge is whether businesses not only wish to enter that "door", but also explore the space further.
But adoption of digital payments does not automatically equate to improved financial literacy.
Indonesia's financial inclusion index is at 80.51%, 2025 OJK data showed. Financial literacy index stood at 66.46%. The gap shows how people tend to be quicker at using the financial services compared to understanding the benefits, risks, and how to manage them. The 2024 Indonesian Digital Society Index showed a digital empowerment score of only 25.68, well below the digital skills score of 58.25. While technology is readily available, it has not yet consistently served as a tool to strengthen economic well-being.
This is where QRIS must be understood as more than just a payment code.
Bank Indonesia designed QRIS as a national standard allowing a single code to accept payments from various payment service providers.
QRIS is also intended to serve as a gateway for MSMEs to enter the digital ecosystem, opening doors to financing and other financial services. However, the greatest value of QRIS lies not merely in transaction speed, but in the transaction trail it creates, which helps business owners track income patterns with greater discipline.
QRIS Astrapay offers a relevant context for this transformation.
AstraPay enables merchants to accept payments from various digital wallets and mobile banking services, monitor transaction history via a dashboard, receive daily fund settlements, and utilize automated transaction recording. A payment notification serves as more than just an alert that funds have been received; it can spark new habits — specifically, recording, comparing, and evaluating financial data.
For micro-enterprises, it is also crucial to understand the QRIS Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) regulations. For micro-enterprise transactions up to Rp 500,000, the MDR is set at zero percent, while transactions exceeding this amount incur a 0.3% fee.
Small changes can begin with three questions asked at the end of each day: Which products sold the most? During which hours was transaction volume highest? What portion of revenue should be set aside as capital for tomorrow's inventory? The International Finance Corporation (IFC) explains that sales transactions can be linked to accounting records, cash flow, customer patterns, sales trends, and inventory management.
Digital payments should not only speed up the checkout process but also enable shop owners to better understand the direction of their business.
The OECD defines "digital financial literacy" as a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary for individuals to be aware of and safely use digital financial services and digital technologies with a view to contributing to their financial well-being.
Several studies reinforce this idea. Research involving 5,035 ultra-micro, micro, and small enterprises across 17 Indonesian provinces revealed a link between digital adoption, business performance, and financial literacy (Affandi et al., 2024).
Another study focusing on MSME owners using QRIS found that financial literacy positively influences the effectiveness of QRIS usage (Santoso & Nainggolan, 2023).
Najib and Fahma (2020) demonstrated that ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, and trust influence the adoption of digital payments among Indonesian MSMEs. The message is clear: technology can be set up in minutes, but its benefits only materialize when business owners feel capable, confident, and willing to use it consistently.
The next step is to separate business funds from personal funds.
QRIS AstraPay transaction history can serve as the basis for daily reconciliation, with the results simply recorded in a cash book or digital spreadsheet. Business owners do not need to become data analysts overnight; simply start by comparing daily revenue, raw material costs, and the stock items that sell out the fastest. These simple patterns can lead to more rational business decisions.
The IFC highlighted that financial records and business data are crucial for helping financial institutions understand the profiles and risks of MSMEs, although transaction records are not an automatic guarantee of securing financing.
However, digitalization should not be built on blind trust.
ASEAN emphasizes the importance of transparent costs, consumer protection, complaint mechanisms, and fraud prevention to ensure that digital payments earn the genuine trust of micro-merchants. The OECD also warns that digital payments carry security risks and the potential for losing control over spending if not accompanied by adequate financial literacy. AstraPay advises users never to share their PIN, OTP, password, or verification code with anyone and to always verify information through official channels .
Therefore, small shops need not pursue complex digitalization.
Simply adopt three habits: reconcile digital and cash transactions every evening; use transaction data to plan inventory for peak hours; keep business accounts or wallets separate from personal finances.
QRIS AstraPay can facilitate this process, but the primary driver remains the business owner willing to learn how to track their own cash flow.
A small shop truly levels up not merely by displaying a QR code at the checkout counter, but when every notification sound turns into a record, every record translates into a decision, and every decision brings the business one step closer to healthy growth.
