Jakarta. The role of Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) in narrating the development of Indonesia’s maritime industry on the global stage is considered significant. This was conveyed by Gita Wirjawan, an entrepreneur and former of Trade Minister (2011–2014), during the Sustainability Class held by PIS.

“The narrative of Pertamina International Shipping is beautiful -- with the empowerment of hundreds of vessels, outstanding financial performance, and the potential to become a narrator not only for Pertamina or Indonesia, but also for Southeast Asia, which represents 9 percent of the world’s population with 700 million people. I believe the prospects for PIS to become a truly cool narrator for Indonesia cannot be underestimated,” he said.

Gita also praised PIS’s commitment and strategic role in driving sustainable transformation in the national maritime industry. According to him, PIS has demonstrated tangible proof of integrating environmentally friendly business practices with Indonesia’s green economic development goals through a strong narrative.

“With a solid organization and ever-evolving ideas, PIS has a strong foundation to move further, especially in the sustainability sector. This combination will pave the way toward greater success in the future,” Gita remarked.

Furthermore, Gita emphasized the importance of a strong sustainability narrative, which requires a combination of deep understanding in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and compelling storytelling skills. “This is how we can move up the value chain with greater productivity and also remain relevant in the geopolitical arena with a sustainability narrative.”

As is widely known, PIS actively promotes the implementation of Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) values across all its business lines. PIS organizes sustainability classes to enhance the capacity of its officers, enabling the company to accelerate ESG implementation.

During the event, PIS CEO Surya Tri Harto said the company has a long-term vision to accelerate decarbonization in order to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 -- a target that is 10 years ahead of the Indonesian government’s official goal.

“Our mission is to become a global maritime logistics company that not only focuses on our core business of petroleum transportation but also expands into other maritime services and strengthens the green business pillar. Our commitment to green business is not just a trend, but part of our strategy to face the global energy transition and broaden PIS’s role in international markets,” Surya said.

To achieve this target, PIS continues to expand initiatives involving eco-friendly vessels, the use of biodiesel in its fleet, and the adoption of renewable energy at port facilities. This strategy is designed not only to meet global regulations but also to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a major player in the sustainable maritime industry in the region.

Throughout 2024, PIS recorded significant achievements in its decarbonization efforts, successfully reducing carbon emissions by 51,090 tons of CO₂. This achievement was supported by the adoption of green ship technologies, including ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) and the installation of scrubbers to manage ship waste, thereby reducing ecological impacts when vessels are docked at ports.

These sustainability efforts not only support the company’s long-term targets but also reinforce PIS’s position as a pioneer in maritime logistics that adapts to the challenges of the global energy transition. With the support of technology, innovation, and ESG-oriented governance, PIS continues to prove that business performance and sustainability can go hand in hand harmoniously.
