Aceh. Muslim philantropic organization Dompet Dhuafa said Tuesday that they had provided mental health support for the young victims in the flood-hit Aceh Tamiang.

The catastrophic disaster had left painful memories for the survivors. Sekumur villager Usnul Yakin said that he realized his eight-year-old child was not in a good mental state. The child has been talking in his sleep since the family's house got destroyed by the flood.

"Not to mention, my wife often yells at my child who cries for food. I understand because we have limited food, and my wife is also stressed by this disaster," said Usnul.

"The day after the disaster, I went down to Kuala Simpang. I walked for kilometers just to find snacks for my children," he said.

The survivors rely solely on aid for their daily food needs. And none of that aid includes the snacks children usually enjoy.

"Entertain our children. They need entertainment," said Usnul.

On Dec. 12-16, dozens of children from Sekumur Village gathered in front of the Dompet Dhuafa Post tent. The Dompet Dhuafa Disaster Management Center (DMC) played along with these kids. The children also played, drew, and sang. These activities that aimed to make them smile were part of Dompet Dhuafa DMC's psychological first aid activities.

"Thank you. The children can play and be happy again," Usnul said.

Hanifah, a midwife in Sekumur Village, also welcomed the initiative. Her child often talks in her sleep at night since the disaster.

"Thank God, the children are entertained because they can play with the Dompet Dhuafa brothers and sisters. The children can sing and color together. Thank God, we are happy with the presence of these Dompet Dhuafa brothers and sisters," said Hanifah.
