BNI and PBSI Nurture Indonesia’s Next Generation of Badminton Champions
Jakarta. Indonesia’s young badminton players have made significant progress over the past two years, with several rising through the world rankings and entering the sport’s elite competition, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to develop the next generation of players.
Alwi Farhan, for instance, climbed from 46th in the world in January 2025 to break into the top 10 by October 2026. Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah, known as Ubed, also made substantial progress, rising from 158th to 29th in the world rankings.
In men’s doubles, the pair of Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin recorded a similarly notable rise, advancing from around 500th in the world to 14th.
These achievements are part of the broader player development and regeneration efforts led by the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI), which aim to give young athletes opportunities to build experience, strengthen their competitive mentality and improve their ability to compete internationally.
BNI Corporate Secretary Okki Rushartomo said the progress of young players was an important indicator of the sustainability of Indonesia’s badminton achievements.
“What makes us optimistic is not just the number of medals won, but also seeing more young Indonesian athletes develop and begin competing among the world’s top players. For BNI, this is one indicator that the development and regeneration process must be maintained consistently,” Okki said in a written statement.
As a strategic partner of PBSI for more than five years, state-owned Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) has consistently supported the development of Indonesian badminton, including young athlete development, competition organization and opportunities to compete at national and international levels.
One initiative supporting talent development across the country is the wondr by BNI PBSI National Championships. The 2025 championships brought together 775 athletes from 34 provinces, providing a platform for players to demonstrate their abilities and pursue opportunities for advancement to higher levels of training and competition.
BNI has also supported various development and competition programs organized with PBSI, including Indonesian athletes’ participation in the Indonesia Masters, Badminton Asia Championships, Indonesia Open, Thailand Open and Badminton Asia Junior Championships throughout 2026.
According to Okki, regeneration is essential to ensure Indonesia’s badminton achievements do not depend on a single generation of players.
“BNI believes that developing champions is not just about winning today, but also about ensuring that the next generation is ready to carry Indonesia’s achievements forward. That is why we want to be part of the process, from supporting athlete development and providing opportunities to grow and compete to backing them as they reach the international level,” he said.
He added that sustaining athlete development required consistent programs, sufficient competition opportunities, quality support teams and collaboration among stakeholders across the badminton ecosystem.
“Winning six medals at the Asian Games is an achievement we should be grateful for. However, what matters more to us is how this achievement becomes a foundation for developing the next generation. We hope the collaboration among BNI, PBSI, the government, athletes, coaches and the entire badminton ecosystem will continue to produce more champions who bring honor to Indonesia on the world stage,” Okki said.
As a state-owned company within the Danantara Indonesia ecosystem, BNI continues to support the development of skilled and competitive Indonesian talent and human resources.
Building on its eight-decade journey and the spirit of Swadharma Bhakti Nagara, BNI will continue to strengthen its support for athlete development and regeneration as part of its contribution to national sports.
