Bengkulu Govt Backs PLN's Geothermal Push
Bengkulu. The Bengkulu government is giving its full support for the state-run electricity firm PLN to generate geothermal power in the region.
PLN is currently constructing the Hululais Geothermal Power Plant, with a target of commercial operation in 2028. The Kepahiang Geothermal Power Plant is also in the pipeline and is currently in the process of selecting a strategic partner. This plant is slated for operation in 2030.
"We fully support this development and hope that every stage will be carried out safely, according to procedures, and with due regard for the community's interests. Thus, this development can advance the region and provide tangible benefits to the Bengkulu people," its governor Helmi Hasan said on Thursday.
According to Helmi, the plants also align with the regional government's goal of striking a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The Hululais plant lies in the Lebong region.
"This development is not only about electricity supply, but also brings new hope for the economic growth of Lebong Regency," its regent Azhari said.
Suroso Isnandar, the director for project management and renewables at PLN, welcomed the collaboration with the local governments.
"PLN cannot work alone in realizing the energy transition. Support and collaboration from the regional government are crucial for us to ensure that the geothermal power plant construction is completed on time, maintains quality, and brings significant benefits to the community," Suroso said.
John Y S Rembet, the company's executive vice president for geothermal energy, highlighted how Bengkulu is a strategic region for geothermal energy. According to the 2025-2034 power plan, PLN will develop two major projects. The Hululais project will have a capacity of 2x55 MW (megawatts). The Kepahiang project boasts a capacity of 2x55 MW.
"These two projects are expected to not only strengthen Sumatra's electricity system but also become drivers of the regional economy," said John.
Geothermal development in Bengkulu will have a broad multiplier effect, ranging from the involvement of local businesses, employment creation, improved road infrastructure, and sustainable corporate social responsibility initiatives.
"The plants' development not only provides environmentally friendly electricity, but also opens up many opportunities for the community. We want every step of development to be inclusive, involving the local government and community, and bringing tangible economic and social benefits," John said.
