Jakarta. Upstream oil and gas regulator SKK Migas recently secured the gold rank at the 2025 Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating (ASRRAT).

This award recognizes SKK Migas and the upstream oil industry's commitment to sustainability amidst rising production.

"SKK Migas, alongside the working areas contractors, is working hard to boost production and lifting. However, we will still make sure that sustainability remains a priority. Our strategic planning does not only include production, but also aims to support Indonesia's commitment to net zero emissions," SKK Migas head Djoko Siswanto said.

SKK Migas also hopes the 2025 ASRRAT can motivate them to come up with new breakthroughs.

A sustainability report summarizes an organization's activities and policies that align with and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This report is prepared in accordance with standards developed by the international organization General Reporting Initiative (GRI).

The National Center for Corporate Reporting (NCCR holds ASRRAT each year to assess the sustainability reports of various agencies. In 2025, 82 companies took part in the assessments, including 78 from Indonesia, 1 from Bangladesh, and 3 from the Philippines. SKK Migas has received a gold rank seven times so far.

According to Djoko, sustainability starts with concrete and realistic short-term actions. The upstream oil and gas industry has undertaken some initiatives to cut emissions. This ranges from increasing energy efficiency, minimizing gas flares to zero flaring, to methane emission reductions. The industry has also adopted carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, such as in Ubadari at Tangguh. It will also be available in the upcoming Abadi Masela project.

 In the upstream oil and gas industry, CCUS has long been implemented in Indonesian oil fields for EOR CO2 flooding, such as in the Sukowati field, and for pressure maintenance at Exxon Mobil Cepu's Banyu Urip field.

Indonesia has enormous carbon storage potential on top of supportive regulations, according to Djoko.

"SKK Migas has issued a work procedure guideline providing clear guidance for CCS and CCUS projects in Indonesia's upstream oil and gas sector. This document serves as a reference for contractors in their planning, evaluating, implementing, monitoring, and reporting. It also empowers SKK Migas to evaluate and oversee projects to ensure they run efficiently, safely, and accountably," Djoko said.

"And although the regulatory climate is very supportive, realizing real CCS/CCUS projects still requires strong collaboration between all stakeholders."
