A Romantic Escape at Viceroy Bali, Ubud
There is a version of Bali built entirely for two. No lobby crowds, no noise bleeding between rooms. Just a ridge above the Valley of the Kings, known locally as Lembah Maha Raja, and 40 private pool villas set into the hillside, with a quiet so complete that on some mornings the only sound is the jungle below.
This is Viceroy Bali, and it has been earning its reputation as one of Ubud's most romantic resorts since the first villas opened in 2005. For couples who want a stay that delivers on the word escape, it remains one of the island's more considered choices.
The property is 10 to 15 minutes by car from central Ubud and 1.5 to 2 hours from Ngurah Rai International Airport, with transfers provided in the boutique hotel's electric Denza D9.
A Villa That Feels Like Your Own
Forty private pool villas run down the hillside across nine categories, each with alang-alang thatched roofs maintained by local craftsmen, a Balinese bale for open-air breakfast, and a heated pool facing the gorge where the Petanu River drops away below the ridge.
For couples, the Deluxe Terrace Villa is the most popular choice, at 150 square metres with a 3.5m by 4.5m heated infinity pool and a freestanding bath. The Pool Suite and Terrace Villa work in the same register at a smaller scale, while the Elephant Villa gives 240 square metres, a 4m by 10m heated pool, and views down the Petanu gorge.
Inside, Balinese design influences meet clean contemporary lines, with indigenous art throughout and the lighting kept low. Breakfast is made to order and served in the villa or at the bale. There is a welcome sorbet on arrival, soft drinks and snacks in the minibar, and a complimentary cocktail hour three evenings a week. The staff-to-guest ratio is five to one, which is why so little of this needs to be asked for.
Beyond the Villa
The 200 square metre infinity pool looks over the valley, and mid-morning, once the mist has lifted, is the hour to have it. There is a cinema room, a fitness studio, a squash court, and an organic kitchen garden; guests are welcome to walk with the chef. Anything beyond the gate is arranged by the guest services team.
Quiet Hours at Akoya Spa
Akoya Spa features three private single treatment rooms and three dedicated double suites, plus a cold plunge and a sauna. Treatments blend the age-old wisdom of Balinese healing traditions with modern Western science, and many can be administered in the villa, which is often the better option for couples.
Dinner at Apéritif Restaurant
A good dinner is central to any romantic escape, and Apéritif is a strong argument for staying in. Art Deco lines, Georgian doors, chandeliers overhead, antiques and mid-century heirloom pieces, and a dress code of smart-to-formal that the room earns.
Under the culinary artistry of the Apéritif team, the kitchen works to a philosophy of “European Technique. Indonesian Soul.” The degustation menu, Guided by the Moon, runs to five or seven courses, with indigenous spices and seasonal Ubud produce carried through each one. Vegetarian and vegan degustation menus are standing menus rather than requests. The sommelier team handles the pairings from the wine cellar. For couples marking something in particular, the Romantic Candlelight Dinner is set for two. Dinner runs from 6 pm to 8.30 pm; booking is required, and it is worth allowing two to three hours.
An Evening at Pinstripe Bar
After dinner, Pinstripe Bar makes the case for staying up. The hidden speakeasy sits above the Valley of the Kings in marble, dark wood, and bronze, and it takes the sunset, so arriving early is the move. The cocktail menu, The Clairvoyant, draws on the artist Miguel Covarrubias and his time in 1920s New York and 1930s Bali, across four sections: Harlem Renaissance, Bali Sojourn, Pinstripe Signatures, and The Sober Guide. There is live jazz on Fridays and Saturdays, a wide selection of cigars, and the room is open daily from 4 pm until late.
Earned Quietly
Viceroy Bali holds One MICHELIN Key for 2025. It was named No 1 Resort in the World by the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards in 2018, and No 8 Best Resort Indonesia by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards in 2025, and it took Best Luxury Honeymoon Resort Worldwide at the World Luxury Hotel Awards 2024. In June 2026, it became one of the first boutique hotels in Ubud to be GSTC Certified, from drinkable tap water in every villa to the 18-step wastewater treatment that returns clean water to the Petanu River.
For couples looking for a stay in Ubud where the setting, villas, food, and evenings all hold their own, Viceroy Bali is as complete as it gets.
