Jakarta. A 5-year-old boy in Pekanbaru, Riau, has died from serious injuries sustained in a fireworks explosion.

"The incident happened on Friday night," Riau Police spokesperson Ad. Sr. Cmr. Guntur Aryo Tejo told news portal Tempo.co.

The child was playing firecrackers with two friends in front of his house in Marpoyan district, Pekanbaru. The boy was placing it inside a can when it exploded, injuring his neck and inflicting serious burns.

Firecrackers and fireworks are easily obtainable in Indonesia during Ramadan, despite the high number of injuries they cause.
