Jakarta. Two people have been confirmed dead, and one remains missing after an Indonesian Army helicopter crashed during a forest-firefighting mission near Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, military officials said Wednesday.

The MI-17V5 helicopter was carrying eight crew members when it crashed while conducting a water-bombing operation, said Maj. Gen. Zainul Arifin, commander of the XXII/Tambun Bungai Regional Military Command.

“Five crew members are being treated here; two have been confirmed dead, and one is still being searched for,” Zainul told reporters in Kuala Pembuang on Wednesday evening.

Zainul traveled to Seruyan Regency with Central Kalimantan Governor Agustiar Sabran to inspect the crash site and visit survivors at Kuala Pembuang Regional Hospital.

Agustiar expressed condolences to the victims' families and hoped the missing crew member would be found alive. He also wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

Central Kalimantan Police Chief Insp. Gen. Iwan Kurniawan said police would assist with evacuation and other emergency response efforts.

“We will help with the evacuation and rescue efforts, as we have been working together in handling forest and land fires,” Iwan said.

The helicopter crashed into waters off Sungai Perlu village in Danau Sembuluh district, Seruyan Regency, while collecting water for a firefighting operation at Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan.

According to an initial report from the Tambun Bungai Military Command, the helicopter, led by pilot-in-command Major Dudi, took off at around 9:55 a.m. on a route from Kuala Pembuang to Telaga Pulang and back. Its mission was to conduct water-bombing operations in the Telaga Pulang resort area, within the first management section of Tanjung Puting National Park.

An emergency signal prompted a joint search and rescue operation involving air and water teams. Central Kalimantan Military Commander Major General Zainul Arifin and military spokesman Colonel Dodo Sahata also headed to the crash site to monitor the response.
