University Student Arrested in Rp 1.2 Billion Coldplay Concert Ticket Scam
Jakarta. The South Jakarta Metropolitan Police have arrested a university student involved in a ticket scam related to the Coldplay music concert last year, resulting in losses of up to Rp 1.2 billion ($75,700).
According to Deputy Chief of Detectives Henrikus Yossi, the suspect, identified as DA, 22, had prior acquaintance with the victim, having collaborated on ticket procurement for previous music events.
"The victim and the suspect were acquainted. They had previously ordered tickets for other concerts," Yossi said on Tuesday.
The suspect was apprehended last Wednesday at her hideout in South Jakarta.
Yossi revealed that the fraudulent activities commenced in April 2023, coinciding with the announcement of the Coldplay concert in Jakarta. The ticket transactions occurred between April and November 2023, totaling 30 transactions.
"The victim had ordered a total of 310 tickets, amounting to Rp 1.2 billion," Yossi said.
The police received a report regarding the fraudulent ticket purchases from the victim on November 12, 2023, three days before the concert.
Yossi explained that the suspect used various tactics to persuade the victim to purchase tickets. In April 2023, the suspect claimed that her parents, who allegedly worked for a travel agency, had access to Coldplay concert tickets.
"At that time, the suspect claimed her parents had a quota of 150 tickets and could even obtain VIP tickets," added Yossi.
Convinced by this information, the victim transferred a sum of money to the suspect to purchase the tickets.
Additionally, the suspect asserted connections with concert organizers to secure the ticket quota.
However, on November 8, 2023, the suspect failed to deliver the promised tickets despite receiving payment. The victim remained without tickets even as the concert date approached.
The suspect DA faces a maximum prison sentence of 4 years.
Investigations into the scam are ongoing, with Yossi not ruling out the involvement of other suspects.
"We are still investigating this case, but so far, there is only one suspect, although it is not impossible that there are other suspects," Yossi added.
Last year, police arrested another college student, Ghisca Debora Aritonang, 19, in connection with a Coldplay concert ticket scam worth Rp 5.1 billion.
