Two Suspects Detained After Quran Desecration Video Sparks Outrage
Lebak, Banten. Indonesian authorities have detained two suspects accused of blasphemy after a video showing the desecration of the Quran went viral on social media.
Police in Lebak regency transferred the suspects, identified by their initials NL and MT, to Rangkasbitung Class III Prison in Banten on Monday, where they are being held pending further investigation.
The two individuals, residents of the Malingping district in Lebak, were escorted to the facility under tight security and accompanied by family members, according to local officials.
A prison officer, who declined to be named, confirmed that the suspects had been received as detainees entrusted by the police.
“They arrived at around 11:41 a.m. and are currently being held as custody detainees from the Lebak Police,” the officer said.
Under Indonesian legal procedures, such detention is a standard step during the investigation phase before a case is formally transferred to prosecutors and brought before a court. Initial detention typically lasts up to 20 days and may be extended depending on the needs of the investigation.
Indra Faizal, an official responsible for inmate admission and orientation at the facility, also confirmed the transfer, saying the suspects had just been delivered from police custody.
The case has drawn widespread attention after footage allegedly showing the suspects stepping on the Quran circulated online, triggering public outrage in the world’s largest Muslim-majority country.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident, but the case is being handled by the Lebak Police as part of an ongoing investigation.
Blasphemy cases are highly sensitive in Indonesia and often attract intense scrutiny from both the public and religious groups. Officials have urged the public to allow the legal process to proceed while maintaining calm.
