Denpasar, Bali. A fast boat carrying foreign and local tourists capsized on Tuesday afternoon near the entrance of Sanur Harbor, killing two Chinese nationals and leaving one crew member missing, according to Indonesian authorities.

The Bali Dolphin Cruise 2 was en route from Nusa Penida to Sanur when it was struck by a large wave around 3:10 p.m. local time, shortly after passing through navigational buoys marking the harbor's entrance. The impact caused the vessel to overturn.

“Several boats were entering safely around that time, but this one appears to have failed to anticipate a large incoming wave,” said Aprianus Hangki, Head of the Benoa Class II Port Authority, during a press briefing in Denpasar.

“The boat was hit and rolled over by the wave,” Hangki explained.

The boat was carrying 80 people in total, including 73 foreign nationals, two Indonesian passengers, and five crew members. Of these, 77 people were rescued. Two Chinese tourists were confirmed dead, and one Indonesian crew member, identified as 23-year-old Kadek Adi, remains missing as of early Wednesday.

The Transportation Ministry confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing, involving teams from the Benoa Port Authority, Nusa Penida Port Office, Denpasar Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Navy, Bali Water Police, and the regional disaster agency BNPB Denpasar.

Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi extended condolences on behalf of the government and pledged a swift investigation into the accident.

"On behalf of the government, we express our deepest condolences. We will respond to this incident promptly and conduct a full evaluation," Dudy said in a written statement.

In response to the incident, the Transportation Ministry has issued a navigational warning in the area to prevent further maritime accidents and ensure vessel safety.
