Jakarta. Two leaders of prominent Indonesian universities have urged the public to remain calm and exercise restraint in responding to the current political situation marked by demonstrations.

The Rector of the University of Indonesia (UI), Heri Hermansyah, said that the public should express their aspirations while preventing anarchic acts.

“All levels of society should be able to convey their aspirations properly and prevent looting and the destruction of public facilities that could harm the people, the nation, and the state,” Heri said in a statement.

Heri also emphasized the importance of strict and fair law enforcement without discrimination to restore public trust. In addition, he encouraged the government to implement pro-people economic policies to ease the public’s economic burden.

“Safeguard the unity and integrity of the nation from division,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Rector of Bogor Agricultural Institute -- or IPB -- Arif Satria, called on all elements of the nation to prioritize dialogue, avoid violence, and maintain unity amid rising political tensions and waves of demonstrations that have recently been accompanied by acts of anarchy.

“We urge the public not to be provoked by groups exploiting the demonstrations for narrow political interests. Diversity and brotherhood among fellow citizens are the greatest assets that must be preserved,” Arif said on Monday.

Arif stressed that demonstrations are a constitutional right, but they must be carried out peacefully and responsibly. He also expressed condolences for the victims, including an online motorcycle taxi driver.

Arif urged law enforcement to firmly and transparently act against perpetrators of anarchy, and called on the President to take swift action to restore political, security, and economic stability.

“Public anger often stems from economic hardship and the lack of sensitivity from public officials. We urge officials and legislators to show empathy, provide reassuring policy narratives, and refrain from flaunting luxury,” he said.

In addition, Arif encouraged a review of fiscal policies that are still considered burdensome to the public. They underscored the importance of rejecting provocations that could divide the nation, and reminded all parties to uphold the values of Pancasila.

“Only on that foundation will Indonesia be able to overcome various tests and challenges,” Arif said.

Previously, demonstrations had been marred by clashes and anarchic acts in recent days, including the burning of government offices, stone throwing, and the destruction of public facilities. However, the situation has been brought under control, and as of Monday morning, public activities have returned to normal, including on toll roads and arterial roads in Jakarta.
