Timah Corruption Case: State Losses Now Estimated at $19 Billion
Jakarta. Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin revealed that the alleged corruption case involving tin commodity trading licenses at state-owned tin miner Timah between 2015 and 2022 resulted in state losses amounting to Rp 300 trillion ($19.35 billion), exceeding the previous estimate of Rp 271 trillion.
"The tin case's calculation results are quite significant, initially estimated at Rp 271 trillion, now reaching around Rp 300 trillion," said Burhanuddin during a press conference at the Attorney General's Office (AGO) building in Jakarta on Wednesday.
This Rp 300 trillion state-loss calculation was made by the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP). Head of BPKB, Muhammad Yusuf, mentioned they conducted an audit, collected evidence, and consulted experts.
Previously, environmental expert Professor Bambang Hero Saharjo from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) estimated that the corruption led to environmental damage of Rp 271 trillion.
The case began with ALW, former operations director of Timah, facilitating illegal mining companies with suspects MRPT and EE. ALW also offered smelter owners to buy illegally mined tin at prices above Timah's standards.
The AGO has named 16 suspects, including socialite Helena Lim and actress Sandra Dewi's husband, Harvey Moeis. Earlier, top prosecutor Febrie Adriansyah, who was investigating the case, was stalked by the police, leading to President Joko Widodo's intervention for clarification from the attorney general and the National Police chief.
"I and the attorney general have no issues at all," Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated on Monday.
