Three Uzbek Terror Suspects Kill Jakarta Immigration Official
Jakarta. Three terrorism suspects from Uzbekistan have killed an immigration official and broken out of the detention facility in North Jakarta, police said on Tuesday.
One suspect was later found dead in Sunter River while two others were arrested in separate locations.
The attack occurred at around 4:00 a.m. on Monday, when officials and guards of the North Jakarta Immigration Office’s detention facility were preparing pre-dawn meals during the fasting month of Ramadan, according to Chief Comr. Aswin Siregar, a spokesman for the National Police’s counterterrorism squad Detachment 88.
The attackers used kitchen knives to kill immigration official Adi Widodo and severely wounded three other people, including immigration staffer Dicky Visto Damas and Detachment 88 officers identified only as Dendry and Bahrain who guarded the facility, Aswin told a news conference at the National Police headquarters in Jakarta.
"Just before the pre-dawn meal, the [three] foreigners held at the detention facility attacked immigration officials and Detachment 88 officers in their attempt to flee," Aswin said.
The attackers were part of four Uzbek nationals aged between 26 and 40 who were arrested by the anti-terror squad on March 24 over suspected links to the international terror network Katiba Tawhid Wal Jihad.
"Three of them managed to escape but the remaining suspect refused to flee," Aswin said.
The identities of all the suspects aren't disclosed.
In the manhunt operation shortly after the attack, one suspect was arrested at the garden of housing complex Bukit Gading Indah, and the second suspect was caught hiding inside a trench near Sunter River.
"Another suspect was found dead in Sunter River. He jumped into the river but drowned himself. His body has been taken to Kramat Jati Hospital for autopsy," Aswin said.
A further investigation revealed that the plan to break out the detention facility came out after the suspects were visited by officials of the Uzbekistan consulate in Jakarta.
"They didn’t want to be deported for fear of harsh punishments in their home country," Aswin said.
The surviving three suspects have been transferred to the detention center of the Jakarta Police as the murder investigation began.
