Sleman, Yogyakarta. Police in Sleman, Yogyakarta, have identified a suspected 400-kilogram wartime aerial bomb, likely a remnant from World War II, prompting an evacuation and traffic closures ahead of its planned disposal on Tuesday morning.

Sleman Police Chief Edy Setianto Erning Wibowo said the device was believed to be an aircraft bomb left over from the Second World War, with an estimated blast radius of about 500 meters.

“It weighs more than 400 kilograms and is likely an aircraft bomb,” Edy told reporters on Monday night. “It is thought to be a relic from the Dutch Second Aggression period (in 1948).”

The bomb was discovered in the Glagaharjo area, prompting authorities to schedule its disposal at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The operation will involve traffic diversions, road closures, and the evacuation of nearby residents.

Seven homes with seven families in Glagaharjo and 14 households in neighboring Wukirsari will be evacuated before the bomb squad begins work.

Edy said the evacuation was precautionary, and residents would be allowed to return home after the operation but barred from approaching the disposal site. “If residents still feel uneasy, the government has prepared temporary shelters. The Social Affairs Office has also set up a public kitchen,” he added.

Authorities will begin the disposal once the area is confirmed to be clear.
