Jakarta. Nearly 1,000 people have been confirmed dead after massive floods and landslides struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said on Monday, as rescue teams continue to search for hundreds still missing.

BNPB said 961 people have been confirmed dead, while 293 remain missing. At least 5,000 others suffered injuries ranging from minor wounds to serious trauma caused by mudflows, collapsing structures, and debris carried by the flash floods.

The hydrometeorological disaster has affected 52 districts and cities, causing widespread destruction to homes and public facilities. BNPB reported damage to 157,600 houses, as well as 1,200 public facilities, 199 health centers, 534 schools, 425 places of worship, 234 government buildings, and 497 bridges.

Aceh has recorded the heaviest losses, with 389 deaths, 62 missing, and 4,300 injured. North Sumatra reported 338 deaths, 136 missing, and 650 injured, while West Sumatra logged 234 deaths, 95 missing, and 113 injured.

At the district level, Agam in West Sumatra suffered the highest fatalities with 179 deaths, followed by North Aceh with 138 and Central Tapanuli with 110.

Nearly one million people remain displaced across the three provinces, with many shelters still lacking adequate supplies of food, medicine, and clean water. Local authorities say large areas remain uninhabitable due to severe structural damage and lingering mud deposits.

Joint search-and-rescue teams from multiple agencies continue to comb remote areas still cut off by landslides and debris. Officials hope the ongoing operations will accelerate evacuation efforts and help locate those still missing.

BNPB warned that casualty numbers could rise as rescuers gain access to more devastated communities.
