South Sulawesi Woman Swallowed by Python While Getting Medicine for Sick Child
Luwu. A resident of Siteba Village in Walenrang Utara District, Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi, named Sariati, 38, has died after being attacked and swallowed by an 8-meter-long python.
The incident took place in the forest area of Dusun Balatana, Siteba Village. The victim's body was discovered after local residents dissected the python's belly. Sariati was fatally swallowed by the python while on her way to buy medicine for her sick child on Tuesday.
Iyang, the Village Secretary of Siteba, explained that initially, the victim had set out on foot through the forest to her relative's house to seek help in purchasing medicine for her child.
"According to the victim's family, she intended to ask her relative for help in buying medicine for her child. Since her relative's house was far away, she had to walk through the forest. When she did not return, her family began searching," Iyang told Beritasatu.com on Tuesday.
The victim was first spotted by her husband, Adiansya, 30, who noticed the python with a swollen belly in the middle of the forest. Suspecting that the python had swallowed his wife, he sought assistance from villagers to dissect the snake.
"Due to suspicions that his wife was swallowed by the python, the villagers, along with the village government and military personnel, dissected the python and found the victim's body inside, already deceased," Iyang said.
In response to the incident, Walenrang District Military Commander, Captain Takdir, urged the public to exercise caution when passing through or working in forests or plantations. He noted that the natural conditions of these areas in the region could pose risks from wild animals threatening human lives.
"We urge residents to remain cautious when passing through forests or plantations, as wild animals could pose dangers," Takdir emphasized.
This incident marks the second instance of a python consuming a human in South Sulawesi Province. On June 11, Farida, 45, a mother of four from Kalempang Village in South Sulawesi, was found inside a python.
In February 2022, a 90-year-old grandmother from Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency in Jambi Province was killed by a six-meter-long python while going to the bathroom near Siau River.
In 2018, a 54-year-old woman was found dead inside a seven-meter-long python in Muna Regency in Southeast Sulawesi, and the previous year, a farmer in West Sulawesi was swallowed by a four-meter-long python in a palm oil plantation.
