Jakarta. The Social Affairs Ministry announced Friday that they had rolled out logistical aid and compensation money worth Rp 2 billion (around $121,910) to Bali flood victims.

Torrential rains earlier this week had triggered deadly flash floods in the tourist haven. Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, and Jembrana were among the most affected areas. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf said that the government had equally distributed the assistance to the victims based on data and according to what the people need.

“Everyone gets the same amount of relief. Family members of those who died in the disaster will get Rp 15 million, while the wounded will receive Rp 5 million,” Saifullah said when visiting the flood victims at a local hospital in Denpasar on Friday. 

The ministry has also provided logistical aid ranging from tents, food, beverages, medicines to maternal and children’s supplies. According to Saifullah, the government has also set up emergency kitchens, refugee shelters, and psychosocial services for the young victims and their parents. 

The aforementioned Rp 2 billion, however, only includes the assistance from the ministry. In other words, the Bali flood victims might receive more aid from the sub-national governments and donors. Every regional government already has its own disaster management funds at their disposal. As for now, the Social Affairs Ministry plans to focus on the evacuation process. They will move on to the building reconstruction and rehabilitation in the next phase.

“We will carry out the rehabilitation process and calculate the financial loss [from the disaster] later,” Saifullah said.

As of Friday morning, the Bali flood has claimed 18 lives, twelve of whom were in Denpasar, according to Bali’s disaster management agency BPBD. Estimates showed that the total financial loss, including from the damaged buildings, totaled Rp 28.9 billion (almost $1.8 million).
