Singapore First in ASEAN to Require ABS on New Motorcycles
Singapore. Singapore will require all new motorcycles to be equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) starting in April 2027, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced Tuesday, making it the first ASEAN country to adopt such a mandate.
Existing motorcycles without ABS will not need to be retrofitted, according to Channel News Asia. As of the end of 2024, about half of Singapore’s motorcycle population is already equipped with the technology.
"The motor industry has an 18-month transition period to clear existing stocks and bring in ABS-equipped models," said LTA.
A 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) report found that motorcycles fitted with ABS have a 37 percent lower fatal crash rate compared to those without.
The regulation comes amid rising accident figures. Fatal crashes involving motorcyclists increased by 20.8 percent in 2024, while fatalities among motorcyclists and pillion riders climbed 25 percent compared with 2023, according to the Traffic Police.
"This new regulation aims to improve safety for motorcyclists, pillion riders, as well as other road users," said LTA.
