Sidoarjo, E. Java. At least one student was killed and dozens injured when a prayer hall collapsed Monday at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java, authorities said. Rescue teams continued to recover survivors as of Tuesday morning.
A total of 89 students were evacuated from the rubble. As many as 38 students were treated at R.T. Notopuro Sidoarjo Hospital, six were taken to Delta Surya Hospital, and 45 received care at Siti Hajar Hospital. Among them, one 13-year-old boy, Maulana Alfian Ibrahim, died and was buried in Bangkalan, Madura. One student remains missing.
“I’m still waiting for news about my child. His whereabouts are unknown, even though he was in the mosque when the collapse happened,” said Novi, the father of the missing student.
Some survivors sustained minor injuries, including Rizki Ramadhan, who suffered cuts to his face and chin. “Hundreds of students were performing the Asr prayer. There was concrete casting on the upper floor, and suddenly it collapsed downward,” Rizki said after receiving treatment.
Raden Abdus Salam Mujib, head of Al Khoziny School, said the prayer hall had just completed roof casting as part of a planned three-story expansion. He suspected the structure could not support the weight of the fresh concrete, triggering the collapse.
The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) dispatched additional teams from Jakarta to accelerate the evacuation. East Java provincial authorities are covering all medical expenses for the victims and have set up field kitchens, oxygen supplies, and water for survivors still trapped under debris.
“Medical teams and volunteers are working in shifts to ensure vital needs are met,” said East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa on Tuesday.
The collapse occurred around 2:40 p.m. local time Monday during the Asr prayer. Families of the victims gathered at Siti Hajar Hospital overnight to seek information about loved ones.
