Jakarta. The House of Representatives’ (DPR) Commission III has called on the Supreme Court and Judicial Commission to investigate the judges who acquitted Gregorius Ronald Tannur, the son of a former legislator, accused of assaulting and killing his girlfriend, Dini Sera Afriyanti on Oct. 3, 2023.

Commission III specifically requested the investigation of Chief Judge Erintuah Damanik, along with judges Mangapul and Heru Hanindyo. The commission demands strict action against these judges in accordance with legal provisions. Vice Chairman of Commission III, Habiburokhman, announced plans for a follow-up meeting with the Supreme Court and Judicial Commission.

Additionally, the commission urged the Attorney General to file a strong appeal and request a travel ban on Tannur through the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. They also demanded the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) to provide protection to victims and witnesses.

Vice Chairman of Commission III, Ahmad Sahroni, criticized the judges' decision as unjust. "Even the most uninformed person would find it shocking that the judges acquitted Tannur despite the clear evidence," Sahroni said after a meeting between Commission III and Dini's family on Monday.

The commission views Tannur's acquittal as a significant anomaly, given the evidence. Video footage and medical reports indicated severe injuries and wrongdoing by Tannur, yet the Surabaya District Court acquitted him, citing alcohol as a factor in Dini's death.

Dini Sera Afriyanti's family plans to file a complaint against the judges with the Supreme Court’s Supervisory Board. "We plan to report to the Supreme Court's Supervisory Board by Wednesday at the latest," said Dimas Yemahura, the family's lawyer.

Dimas is awaiting the official court decision documentation before proceeding. He also expressed concerns about Tannur potentially fleeing the country.

Ronald or His Family Never Apologized

Dini’s father, Ujang Suherman, said that Ronald and his family have not apologized for Dini’s death. "They have never apologized, neither publicly nor privately," Ujang said after meeting with Commission III.

Ujang criticized the Surabaya District Court's ruling and hopes for continued legal action against Ronald. He emphasized that the acquittal was unreasonable, given the prosecutor’s demand for a 12-year sentence.

On Monday afternoon, dozens of women and labor alliance members protested at the Surabaya High Court, demanding a review of Judge Erintuah Damanik's performance. The demonstrators held signs commemorating Dini Sera and called for justice, alleging that the judiciary's decisions favor the privileged while being harsh on the less fortunate.

Fitria Agustin, one of the protesters, argued that the High Court must reassess Judge Damanik’s decision, which they view as unjust and indicative of a legal system that is lenient towards the powerful but severe towards the underprivileged.

Last week, Harli Siregar, Head of the Legal Information Center at the Attorney General's Office, criticized the court's ruling as flawed and unsupported, noting that it did not consider the trial evidence and was based merely on the judges' personal opinions.

Harli expressed disappointment that the court overlooked crucial evidence, including CCTV footage showing the defendant's vehicle running over the victim and forensic reports indicating the victim's cause of death.
