Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has ordered a state reception to honor the upcoming visit of Pope Francis early next month, a presidential aide confirmed on Monday. The reception is intended as a mark of the highest respect, recognizing the Pope's dual roles as both a head of state and the leader of the global Catholic Church.

“Following discussions with the Vatican, Pope Francis is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on September 3, 2024. The next day, he will be welcomed by the President at a state reception at Merdeka Palace,” said Andy Rachmianto, Chief of Protocol for the President’s Office.

On the third day of his visit, Pope Francis will lead a mass at Bung Karno Stadium, with organizers expecting a turnout of approximately 90,000 Catholic faithful.

“In addition to the mass, Pope Francis will take part in several key events, including a meeting with the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque and a visit to the Katedral Church,” Andy added.

The Pope’s visit to Indonesia is part of a broader regional tour that also includes stops in Singapore, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste. His primary message will focus on world peace and unity, said Father Thomas Ulun Ismoyo, spokesperson for the Indonesian organizing committee of the Papal visit.

“These messages are inclusive and intended for all, not just the Catholic Church,” Father Thomas said at a news conference in Jakarta.

The Pope will also meet with interfaith leaders during his visit to promote religious tolerance, Father Thomas continued.

“In Indonesia, religious leaders hold significant influence due to their large followings. If they can unite around shared values and concerns, we can foster better humanity, deeper friendships, and work for the common good of all people,” he said.
