Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto is set to deliver a speech to the UN General Assembly in New York on September 23, marking the first in-person appearance by an Indonesian leader at the global forum in a decade.

Prabowo will also be making his debut at the organization’s annual session since rising to power last October. September 23 is the first day of the so-called General Debate, the annual meeting of world’s heads of state. According to his spokesman Hasan Nasbi, Prabowo will become the third speaker that day after his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and American leader Donald Trump. 

“But I can’t reveal any details about the speech. Let’s just wait for the president’s speech,” Hasan told the press in Jakarta, although he said that it was possible that Prabowo’s remarks would revolve around economic and geopolitical matters.

Prabowo’s upcoming appearance would be historic as his predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo always opted to skip the UNGA Summit during his 10-year presidency. Jokowi, however, had joined the forum virtually twice in the pandemic-struck 2020 and 2021. 

Hasan also could not confirm Prabowo’s full schedule aside from attending the general debate, including on whether he would finally have bilateral talks with Trump.
