Prabowo Convenes Ex-Presidents, Party Leaders to Assess Iran War Fallout
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday night convened former presidents, former vice presidents, and political leaders to assess the geopolitical and economic implications of escalating military strikes by Israel and the United States against Iran.
All living former presidents and vice presidents attended the unscheduled meeting at the State Palace, except Megawati Soekarnoputri.
According to former foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda, Prabowo outlined the latest geopolitical developments and highlighted the conflict’s implications for global security and peace.
Hassan said the president noted that when the United Nations is no longer effective and the rules-based international order becomes a norm without enforcement power, countries subjected to military aggression face increasing difficulty in seeking resolution through multilateral channels.
Against this backdrop, Prabowo stressed that Indonesia must carefully navigate its national interests — not only in relation to major powers but also amid intersecting global interests.
“The implications of this conflict are not limited to global security and peace, but extend to the global economy, particularly oil and gas supply,” Hassan said.
He noted that the Gulf region has been the theater of three major wars over the past three decades: the 1991 Gulf War following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, and the current conflict, which he described as a third destabilizing chapter in the energy-rich region.
The duration and form of military operations will determine the scale of the fallout, Hassan added. A deployment of ground troops could prolong hostilities and trigger wider resistance.
“We must calculate what this means for us and how we should respond,” he said.
Al Muzammil Yusuf, chairman of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), said Prabowo gave serious attention to the potential impact of the Iran conflict on Indonesia.
The president underscored the urgency of strengthening national resilience — from defense preparedness and food security to energy supply guarantees — at a time when global-scale conflicts can erupt with little warning, Muzammil said.
The discussion was ultimately directed toward national consolidation and unity, aimed at ensuring Indonesia possesses the cohesion needed to confront escalating global tensions.
Also present were former presidents Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, former vice presidents Jusuf Kalla, Ma'ruf Amin, and Boediono, along with party leaders and former foreign ministers.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the president sought to exchange views and maintain close communication with senior national figures as Indonesia navigates an increasingly volatile global environment.
