PPP Ends Leadership Rift, Appoints Mardiono as Chairman and Agus as Deputy
Jakarta. The long-divided United Development Party (PPP) has officially ended its leadership dispute, with the government confirming Muhamad Mardiono as party chairman and Agus Suparmanto as his deputy on Monday.
The announcement, made by Justice Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, formally recognizes the new leadership lineup, marking the end of months of internal strife that had split the Islamic-based party into two rival factions.
“Today, I issued a new ministerial decree confirming Mr. Muhammad Mardiono as PPP’s chairman and Mr. Agus Suparmanto as deputy chairman,” Supratman told reporters in Jakarta.
Both Mardiono and Agus attended the press conference together, symbolizing the party’s long-awaited reconciliation after each side had previously held separate congresses to legitimize their respective leadership claims.
Supratman added that the new central executive board now includes figures from both factions, reinforcing the spirit of unity and compromise within the party.
“We hope this new decree will bring harmony back to the PPP family,” he said, urging the new leadership to hold a national working meeting and consolidate internally following the conflict.
The PPP -- once Indonesia’s most prominent Islamic political party -- has seen its influence sharply decline in the post-Soeharto democratic era as new Islamic and nationalist parties emerged.
In last year’s general election, PPP failed to secure any House of Representatives seats for the first time in its history, a setback that deepened internal tensions and triggered the leadership crisis.
