Police Traffic Corps Reports 15% Reduction in Accidents During Eid Exodus
Jakarta. The National Police Traffic Corps recorded a decrease of 15 percent in accidents during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr exodus compared to last year's Eid.
"Nationally, traffic accidents have decreased from 2,159 to 1,835, a decrease of 15 percent," said the Corps Chief Aan Suhanan, to reporters on Friday.
Furthermore, Aan continued, the number of fatalities also decreased by 3 percent. "The number of fatalities also decreased from 291 to 281," he said.
Meanwhile, the number of severe injuries increased by 13 percent, from 281 victims to 317 victims. "As for minor injuries, they decreased from 3,036 victims to 2,424 victims," he added.
According to Aan, exhaustion was the dominant factor in accidents during the 2024 exodus. He urged drivers to prioritize their health. "We continue to advise drivers to ensure that their health stamina is in prime condition during this return flow," said Aan.
He urged drivers not to push themselves if they are tired. "Do not drive when concentration is reduced; if tired, rest," he added.
On Thursday, a bus operated by transport operator Rosalia Indah careened into a roadside ditch in Central Java, killing at least seven people including two children.
This accident occurred just three days following another devastating incident in West Java, where a bus collided head-on with a minibus, resulting in the loss of 12 lives.
The Transportation Ministry forecasts that 193.6 million individuals, approximately 71.7 percent of the nation's populace, will partake in the Eid exodus this year, marking a significant 50 percent rise from last year's exodus.
