Police Probe Acid Attack on Human Rights Activist
Jakarta. Police are investigating an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence, or KontraS, and are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the perpetrator.
Andrie Yunus, the deputy coordinator of KontraS, was attacked by an unidentified assailant late Thursday night after leaving an event in Jakarta. He sustained serious injuries from the corrosive substance.
Johnny Eddizon Isir, head of public relations for the National Police, said investigators are currently collecting and analyzing digital evidence from the scene.
“The collection of various digital evidence, including CCTV footage, is underway and is currently being analyzed further,” Isir said in Jakarta on Friday.
Police are also questioning witnesses who were near the scene to help identify the perpetrator.
“We hope the suspect can be identified soon,” Isir said, adding that all evidence will be examined using scientific investigative methods.
He said the investigation would follow procedural and professional standards and rely on crime-science techniques to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The assault occurred Thursday night after Yunus had finished recording a podcast at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI). The discussion, titled “Remilitarization and Judicial Review in Indonesia,” ended at around 11 p.m.
According to Dimas Bagus Arya, coordinator of KontraS’ working body, Yunus was attacked by an unknown individual shortly after leaving the venue.
He was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment following the incident. Doctors found that Yunus suffered burns covering about 24% of his body, with injuries reported on his hands, face, chest, and eyes.
Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or disclosed a possible motive for the attack.
