Jakarta. Police have arrested four suspects, including a well-known young entrepreneur, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a state-owned bank branch manager, Mohamad Ilham Pradipta, 37.

Closed-circuit footage showed Ilham’s abduction in the parking lot of Lotte Mart, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, on the evening of Aug. 20. Dressed in a batik shirt, he was walking toward his car in light rain when several men stepped out of a white vehicle, blocked him, and forced him into their car.

The next morning, at about 5:30 a.m., a cattle herder discovered Ilham’s body in Nagasari village, Bekasi. His eyes, hands, and feet were bound tightly with duct tape.

The case has gripped public attention after one of the alleged masterminds was identified as Dwi Hartono, a 30-something businessman with a strong presence in the digital, education, and philanthropic sectors.

Police spokesperson Ade Ary Syam Indradi said the arrests were carried out in two stages. On Saturday night, Aug. 23, police captured Hartono and two associates, identified as YJ and AA, in the city of Solo, Central Java. A fourth suspect, identified as C, was arrested the following day in North Jakarta’s Pantai Indah Kapuk neighborhood.

“DH (Hartono) is an entrepreneur. One of his businesses is an online tutoring platform,” Ade Ary said in a press briefing. He also confirmed Hartono’s official Instagram handle, @klanhartono, which has more than 37,000 followers.

Hartono is widely recognized in Indonesia’s startup and motivational speaker circles. He has built ventures spanning property, agriculture, trading, e-commerce, fashion, skincare, and education. His YouTube channel, Klan Hartono, boasts more than 169,000 subscribers, where he regularly posts motivational content and entrepreneurship advice for young Indonesians.

Beyond business, Hartono founded the Hartono Foundation, a nonprofit that provides scholarships, healthcare support, and small business empowerment programs. The foundation has documented initiatives including full scholarships for underprivileged students, healthcare assistance, and micro-enterprise training.

One of Hartono’s flagship businesses is Guruku.com, an online education platform operated under Digitalisasi Aplikasi Indonesia. The app offers affordable learning services with additional features such as business training and professional skill development.

He also owns Hartono Mandiri Makmur, a marketplace company based in Bogor, on the outskirts of Jakarta.

Many Indonesians have expressed shock at the allegations, questioning how a figure associated with youth empowerment and social initiatives could be implicated in a violent crime.

Police have yet to disclose the motive behind the killing, saying only that investigations are ongoing to determine each suspect’s role in the crime.
