Jakarta. The community of online motorcycle taxi drivers, or ojek, held a peaceful rally at the National Monument (Monas) area in Jakarta on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. local time.

The rally was conducted by distributing white roses to joint security officers, including the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police, and other security personnel.

On-site monitoring showed that each participant was screened beforehand to ensure they were actual ojol drivers, to prevent provocateurs or unrelated individuals from joining the rally.

“We want to send a message of peace. By giving out these white roses, we hope that Indonesia remains peaceful and no more riots occur like before,” said Daeng, one of the participants.

The drivers appeared enthusiastic and joyful in taking part. They considered the activity a form of solidarity among ojol drivers, as well as a way to express their hope for Jakarta and Indonesia to become more conducive and harmonious.

The event proceeded in an orderly manner, with participants circling Monas while handing out white roses to officers, who welcomed them with smiles and appreciation.

It is known that this peaceful rally was held following protests by ojol drivers over the death of their colleague, Affan Kurniawan, who was killed during clashes with security forces in a demonstration against the increase in parliamentary allowances last week.

The case has sparked waves of protest and calls for the government and parliament to show greater concern for the suffering of the people. In addition to demanding justice for Affan, ojol drivers also called for an end to repressive actions by security forces in handling mass protests, as well as for greater transparency and accountability in public policies that directly affect ordinary citizens.

Erna, a spokesperson for the organizers, said the peaceful rally route passed through seven red zones. Starting from Monas, then moving to the Kwitang Brimob Headquarters, Central Jakarta Police Headquarters, Kemayoran District Military Command, North Jakarta Police Headquarters, East Jakarta Police Headquarters, and finally returning to Monas.
