Jakarta. The government confirmed Tuesday that the recent powerful 7.5 magnitude quake that rocked Japan did not claim any Indonesian victims.

The powerful quake struck the eastern coast of Aomori prefecture on Monday at around 11.15 p.m. local time. Japan is home to hundreds of thousands of Indonesian citizens, some of whom are students. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo assured that the citizens were safe and sound. 

“As of Tuesday at 8.30 JST [local time], we haven't received any report of an Indonesian victim,” the embassy said.

“Earthquakes are a natural phenomenon that frequently occur in Japan. We urge all Indonesians to stay calm but vigilant.”

The disaster has wounded at least 23 people, with most hurt by falling objects. One even sustained serious injuries. Waves about half a meter in height also struck several coastal communities. Local authorities have already lifted all tsunami advisories, but urged people to remain alert for possible aftershocks. As of December 2024, approximately 199,825 Indonesians lived in Japan, according to the government.
