Jakarta. The government reported that the 7.7-magnitude quake that rocked Japan’s northeast coast on Monday did not claim any Indonesian casualties.

Local authorities had also rolled out tsunami warnings for the Japanese prefectures of Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido. Japan has revised the magnitude of the tremor from the preliminary 7.4.

“There are no reports of any Indonesians affected by the earthquake so far,” Foreign Ministry director for citizen protection Heni Hamidah said.

The government called on Indonesians in Japan to keep a close eye on the tsunami warnings and pay attention to local authorities’ recommendations. As of June 2025, Japan is home to approximately 230,689 Indonesians. Heni did not say how many Indonesians live close to the tremors.

Japan’s government spokesperson Minoru Kihara has said that there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has warned those living in areas under tsunami warnings to evacuate to higher ground.
