Nine Indonesians Confirmed Dead in Hong Kong Apartment Fire
Jakarta. Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that nine Indonesian nationals were among the fatalities in a massive fire that swept through the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district on 26 November. The confirmation followed the formal identification of victims.
The ministry cited an official statement from the Hong Kong police issued on Sunday. In addition to the nine fatalities, three other Indonesian citizens sustained injuries in the incident.
As of Sunday afternoon, authorities reported 146 confirmed deaths and 79 injured in what has become one of the deadliest urban fires in Hong Kong in recent history. Police have detained 11 individuals believed to be connected to the tragedy.
According to data from the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong, around 140 Indonesians — all domestic workers — were employed in the Wang Fuk Court area. Nearly half have so far been accounted for in terms of safety.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the Indonesian consulate has formed a special task force to coordinate with families of the victims in Indonesia.
She explained that the team is responsible for providing support, facilitating information needs and answering questions from the families of Indonesian nationals affected by the fire.
Yvonne added that several victims have already been identified, while others require further verification, including DNA samples from relatives to accelerate the identification process.
With the identification stage and coordination with local authorities still ongoing, the ministry said that the repatriation schedule for the victims’ remains has yet to be determined.
