United Nations.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United Nations on Friday, declaring that Israel will continue its campaign against Hezbollah until its objectives are achieved along the Lebanon border. This comes amid growing fears of a broader regional conflict as the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalates. 

“Israel has every right to remove this threat and return our citizens to their home safely. And that’s exactly what we’re doing ... we’ll continue degrading Hezbollah until all our objectives are met," Netanyahu said to a gallery that — at least from the crowd noise — appeared replete with his supporters.

The Israeli military conducted strikes on Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut shortly after Netanyahu's speech, causing significant blasts in the city.

Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would no longer tolerate Hezbollah’s daily rocket fire and framed Israel’s military operations as essential for the safety of its citizens. His remarks were accompanied by visual aids and a stern comparison of the situation to hypothetical terrorist attacks on American cities like El Paso and San Diego.

While Israel battles Hezbollah along its northern border, Netanyahu's government also remains entrenched in its military operations against Hamas in Gaza. The prime minister insisted that total victory over Hamas is the only way to ensure peace. As of Thursday, more than 41,500 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, with half of the casualties being women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Netanyahu also issued a warning to Iran, accusing the country of fueling conflicts in the region. He called for an end to global appeasement of Iran, while Iran’s seats at the General Assembly sat empty during his speech.

“If you strike us, we will strike you. For too long, the world has appeased Iran," Netanyahu said.

Despite calls from international leaders, including those from the US and France, for a cease-fire to de-escalate the conflict, Hezbollah has not formally responded to the proposals. With over 200,000 people displaced in Lebanon due to Israeli strikes, the region's humanitarian situation remains dire.

Netanyahu concluded his speech by reaffirming Israel’s desire for peace while defending its military actions as necessary measures for national security. However, the absence of a concrete diplomatic solution and the continued exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah raise concerns about a potential all-out regional war.

On Thursday, the leader of the Palestinian Authority and a top Lebanese official both made their cases to fellow leaders — cases that included harsh words for Israel as well. Mahmoud Abbas' first words to the General Assembly were a sentence repeated three times in reference to Gaza: “We will not leave. We will not leave. We will not leave.” He accused Israel of destroying Gaza and making it unlivable. And Abdallah Bouhabib, Lebanon's foreign minister, decried Israel's “systematic destruction of Lebanese border villages.”

“The crisis in Lebanon threatens the entire Middle East,” Bouhabib said. “We wish today to reiterate our call for a cease-fire on all fronts.”
