Myanmar Frees Indonesian Influencer Jailed for Rebellion Ties
Jakarta. Indonesian influencer Arnold Putra has returned home after being detained in Myanmar since December last year, where he was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly funding a rebellion.
Arnold arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang on Monday at around 6:30 p.m. local time on a Garuda Indonesia flight from Bangkok. He was escorted through a separate immigration inspection area upon arrival to maintain security and ensure the comfort of other passengers, according to Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office Acting Head Galih Priya Kartika Perdhana.
“The immigration inspection was conducted in a limited area, considering security aspects and the convenience of other regular passengers,” Galih said in a statement on Tuesday.
Arnold was detained by Myanmar authorities on December 20, 2024, and later convicted under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Law, the 1947 Immigration Act, and Section 17 of the Unlawful Associations Act. He was accused of illegally entering Myanmar and meeting with armed groups designated as prohibited organizations by local authorities.
His return was facilitated through coordination between Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Directorate General of Immigration, and other related agencies.
“Thanks to solid inter-agency coordination, the entire repatriation process, from deportation arrangements to immigration document checks at Soekarno-Hatta, went smoothly and in accordance with procedures,” Galih said.
Records show that Arnold departed Indonesia on December 13, 2024, via Soekarno-Hatta using a valid electronic passport that remains effective until 2034.
